CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

When Lynn opened her eyes again it was dark and the wind was no longer whistling through her hair. “What time is it?” she asked as she stretched.

“A little after eight, I guess.” Beulah Mae was hunched slightly forward over the steering wheel.

“Gosh, I can’t believe I slept for so long. I’m sorry.”

“That’s okay. I’ve always loved driving,” Beulah Mae said.

Lynn noticed the top was up. “You stopped?”

“Yes. It was starting to get a little cool so I stopped and put the top up and filled up the tank while I was at it. I tried to wake you, but you were out like a log.” She glanced toward Lynn. “I guess you’ve had a pretty tough day.”

Lynn leaned back in the seat as all the events of the day came back to her. “Is it really still Thursday?”

“I’m afraid so.”

“Did you ever have a day that simply wouldn’t end?”

Beulah Mae nodded. “I’ve had a lot of those days in the last couple of years.”

Lynn closed her eyes. By now Crissy and her mom would know what she had done. They would be sick with worry. The nursing home would have reported Beulah Mae missing. It wouldn’t be long before dozens of volunteers would be out scouring the street for the elderly woman. Her eyes flew open at the sound of the tires hitting the warning grooves on the edge of the highway. “Are you okay?”

“Sure.” When Lynn continued to stare at her, Beulah Mae added, “The fool behind me has his high beams on. I was only trying to get the glare out of my eyes.”

Lynn glanced behind them. The car didn’t have its high beams on, or maybe it was a different car. “I’ll bet a lot of people are looking for us by now,” she ventured.

“I thought about that when I started planning all this. I didn’t want anyone to worry. That’s why I asked Jay to make a call for me.”

“What sort of call?” Blood rushed to her head so quickly her ears buzzed. Was Beulah Mae inadvertently going to lead the police right to her?

“I asked her to call the nursing home and let them know I had left on my own and that I was going home to Colorado.”

Lynn stared at her in amazement. “You what?” She closed her eyes and rubbed her forehead. “Why didn’t you tell me about this before?”

“Because I knew you would get all huffy and start yelling before I had a chance to explain.”

“God, I hope I wake up soon from this nightmare of a day.”

Beulah Mae ignored her. “Are you hungry?”

“No. Not really.”

“Well, we’re approaching a truck stop. I need some coffee.” Again she glanced at Lynn. “I thought we could stop for a while and have a little talk.”

“Where are we anyway?” Lynn would have preferred to keep moving. The farther they got from San Antonio the better, especially now that their destination was known.

Beulah Mae hesitated. “We’re a ways north of Austin.”

“Austin? Why are we
